Abstract
The granular mattress (GM) layer plays a vital role in enhancing the ‎performance of stone column-reinforced ground by improving load ‎distribution, minimizing differential settlement, and increasing overall system ‎stability. This research examines the impacts of granular mattress layers on ‎stone columns in soft soils, with an emphasis on important characteristics such ‎as thickness, material properties, and interaction of mechanisms. The influence ‎on stress transfer, lateral confinement, and bearing capacity is analyzed ‎through analytical studies, numerical modeling, and experimental findings. ‎The review emphasizes the importance of optimizing granular mattress design ‎to maximize stone column performance. This review serves as a foundation ‎for future research and practical applications in geotechnical engineering, ‎particularly in soft ground stabilization projects. Stone columns have long been recognized as an effective ground improvement technique, ‎particularly for enhancing the engineering properties of soft clay soils The ‎installation process, which involves vibration-assisted insertion of granular materials, improves soil ‎stiffness and drainage capacity, making it a widely used method in geotechnical engineering
