Abstract
Blockchain and smart contracts have revolutionized the construction industry by providing secure, transparent, and decentralized contractual venues. However, the immutability of smart contracts, its inability for modification, is considered a fundamental limitation for such technology within the construction sector, where contracts frequently require modifications due to evolving project requirements and unforeseen circumstances. This study proposes a novel solution for modifying smart contracts by introducing a modifying blockchain linked to the main blockchain. This approach enables contract updates without altering existing records, preserving the integrity of blockchain transactions while providing much-needed flexibility. The proposed solution was validated by six case studies covering different ranges of blockchain loads. The findings highlight the practical feasibility of modifying blockchains for smart contract adaptability, addressing a crucial challenge in blockchain technology. This research lays the foundation for enhanced blockchain applications, particularly in construction, by offering a scalable, efficient, and secure approach to modifying smart contracts.
