Abstract
Urban construction projects are inherently complex due to the dense and variable nature of urban environments. Geotechnical engineering plays a critical role in ensuring the stability and safety of these projects. This paper explores the primary geotechnical challenges encountered in urban construction, including subsoil variability, groundwater management, foundation design, and excavation. Through detailed case studies of foundation design and construction of 3 high-rise buildings within Lagos, Nigeria, this paper highlights innovative solutions and technologies such as advanced soil testing methods, detailed geotechnical foundation design such as soil structure interaction, and ground improvement techniques. Additionally, the paper addresses environmental and regulatory considerations essential for sustainable urban development. By examining these challenges and solutions, this paper aims to provide valuable insights for geotechnical engineers to enhance the resilience and efficiency of urban construction projects by providing mitigation strategies and innovative technologies.
