Abstract
Due to the multiple uses of tunnels, they have spread widely all around the world, which has led to their presence in many places, facing many problems. One of the most important of these problems is the effect of earthquakes on tunnels especially tunnels that pass-through water or are close to it due to their proximity to the epicenter of the earthquake, Tunnels are also exposed to explosions due to terrorist operations leading to high temperatures in the surrounding backfill soils, especially for tunnels with great depths. Therefore, it is essential to understand the dynamic behaviors of the main structures of tunnels subjected to earthquakes, explosions and high temperature occurring in the inside and outside environments of tunnel.
The present paper summarized the historical review of the effect of earthquakes, explosions, and high temperature on tunnels in the last three decades. The present review article led to the importance of studying the effect of secondary loads on tunnel elements behavior taken into consideration for design criteria.
