Abstract
Weak soils exist in many regions in Egypt. These soils are causing many problems due to their low bearing capacity and high compressibility. There are many methods developed to improve these soils. One of the proposed methods is reducing the settlement and lateral deformations using piles surrounding the foundation. piles confine soil inside the system and prevent weak soil lateral expulsion. This study focuses on studying this phenomenon. 3D finite element model was conducted using PLAXIS 3D v 2020 package. Laboratory tests were carried out on medium and soft clay samples to induce index properties, shear strength and consolidation parameters of the tested samples. Numerical modeling used the induced soil properties to simulate skirted foundations within different skirted embedded depth-to-width (D/B) ratios. Effect of piles depth, piles stiffness, piles interface, raft width, and depth of foundation level are the main parameters studied in this paper. piles confine the soil, improve bearing capacity and reduce settlement.
