Abstract
The design of singly-symmetric I-beams under different geometrical configurations did not take the same interest, in any standard or specification, as that of the doubly-symmetric I-beams. The behavior of I-beams which are capped with channel sections is not yet totally investigated. Thus, a numerical study is carried out considering the geometric and material nonlinearities in order to study the elastic and inelastic behavior of such beams.
The numerical approach is verified with an existing experimental work. A parametric study is conducted to study the behavior and strength of simple span I-beam capped with a channel versus the wide flange I-beam. Different parameters are studied such as the location of lateral supports and the geometrical configurations with various spans.
The studied models are subjected to concentrated vertical and horizontal loads applied in the middle of the span at the top of the section. It is found that the different lateral supporting positions and sections shape have significant effect on the load capacity and horizontal displacements of such crane runway beams.
